If there is one universal truth shared between dental providers and patients, its this: Everybody hates THE SHOT. But does it have to be that way?
Management of oral pain may be accomplished through a clinical approach that successfully incorporates intraoperative local anesthesia. However, improper and inappropriate use of local anesthetic agents has the potential to produce life-threatening, systemic adverse reactions. In addition, injection failure can cause not only unnecessary patient discomfort and apprehension but also dental provider frustration.
Join key oral anesthesia experts Tom Viola, R.Ph and Katrina M Sanders RDH, BSDH, M.Ed, RF as their synergistic delivery on anesthetic agents and techniques clarify common challenges and concerns in the provision of local anesthetic delivery. Seminar 1: In this interactive, engaging workshop, Tom guides participants through case scenarios, with special emphasis on developing strategies and techniques essential to accurately identify the need for pain control, individualize patient care, and assess the efficacy of the local anesthetic agents administered. Seminar 2: Katrina discusses the common causes of injection failure, including anatomical and physiological conditions while exploring alternative injection techniques and discussing new trends in the provision of pain management. “Get Numb with Tom & Katrina” as the program concludes with a lively and interactive happy hour Q&A session built to support participants in a collaborative and safe approach to managing oral pain.
Explain the basic mechanism of action of local anesthetic agents.
Differentiate between the two major classes of local anesthetic agents with respect to their distribution, metabolism, adverse effects, drug interactions and contraindications.
Discuss the rationale for the use of vasoconstrictors in local anesthetic solutions and their potential effects in common organ system disease states.
Specify the various local anesthetic agent combinations most commonly used in dentistry and the rationale for their use in specific clinical situations.
Describe physiological and anatomical considerations in identifying inadequate anesthesia
Develop critical thinking skills for troubleshooting local anesthetic delivery
Gain strategies for addressing inadequate local anesthesia during patient care
Discover alternative delivery techniques
Develop critical thinking skills in the provision of troubleshooting local anesthetic delivery
Collaborate on high-level concepts around the provision of oral anesthesia
Dental Hygiene Student & Faculty Course Program
Join Tom & Katrina for a Student & Faculty program intended to review didactic local anesthesia board review content.
Course Objectives:
• Discuss factors that can contribute to an individual’s response to a painful experience, including the three general types of pain and the differentiation between acute and chronic pain
• Explain the normal mechanisms of nerve impulse conduction, including the events in successful nerve impulse generation
• Describe anatomical differences within motor and sensory neurons as well as different nerve fibers and myelinated and unmyelinated nerves.
• Analyze, evaluate and discuss pharmacologic properties of local anesthetic drugs and vasoconstrictors
• Discuss relationships involving pH, pKa, inflammation and effects of local anesthetic drugs on the central nervous system
• Discuss and differentiate various dental local anesthetic drugs, including indications and contraindications
• Discuss and determine properties of vasoconstrictors as well as clinical situations in which vasoconstrictors may be indicated or contraindicated.
